Default BSNL to Alliance : WA3002G4 reuse : Kolkata

    Hi All,

I am planning to move from BSNL to Alliance Broadband. I have a WA3002G4 modem/router, which I used to share among my two laptops (simultaneously used by me and my wife). I want to know if I can do the same thing with Alliance Broadband connection. If yes, can someone guide me please.

If any other router is required can someone give me some proper suggestion. My local operator and me both are pretty dumb in these techy stuffs.

    Thanks and Regards
    Tirthankar

Ok, found the answer in other forum... nway answering my own question .. hope it will help others....

Any normal DSL router (not ADSL Broadband Router as provided by BSNL like my WA3002G4 ) will work with Alliance.

Directly posting what I found in other forums...

How to know ADSL from DSL Routers:

ADSL routers have one incoming jack for Telephone line (RJ11) and one or more Ethernet output ports (RJ45). These will not work with Alliance or like who give boradband over Ethernet. You need DSL routers where input jack is also Ethernet (RJ45). Nowadays, most DSL routers come with WiFi, and they are available at low price (Rs.1500/-). Pricey ones are also available (upto Rs.8000/- having faster connection, file/printer sharing etc.).

If you need to use VPN connection (3rd party provider, for security/anon use) then you need to choose a router compatible with DD-WRT. Please check DD-WRT website before buying one, if you need that feature. DSL Routers do not come with DD-WRT features, you need to flash the firmware of thr Router with DD-WRT by yourself. (D-Link DIR-600 can be flashed with DD-WRT, which I use. It's cheap too).

Configuring DSL Routers for Alliance Broadband is easy. You need to give it the IP address, Subnet and Default Gateway that Alliance gave you, and you are good to go. You can open the IPACTT login page now. But everytime you have to log-in with the ID/Pass in the IPACCT login screen. Once logged in, you can use the wifi and from multiple computers as long as time-out does not occur. You can log-in from any computer/handheld/moblie in your network though.
