Default Do cable ISPs block ports?

I have used Meghbela broadband for 2 weeks, and find that only 17 ports are open out of 65535. Out of the 17, only 2 are barely usable, with overcrowding. Even Windows RDP port 3389 is blocked! I can't use mail clients to send and receive emails, torrenting is very slow and inconsistent.

Why do they block ports? I called them and they said they can't forward ports for this shared IP plan. I'll have to take their leased line services (at atrocious rates) if I want open ports.

Some cable broadband operators do block ports. You pay for a connection and a certain amount of data transfer or if it is unlimited you can do what you like with it as long as you are within the legal boundaries. If your cable operator is giving you a hard time then change your ISP. Go with BSNL.

I did. I took the 1445 BSNL plan. Yet to test out what speed I get (out of the 1 Mbps) after the 20GB. Thank you for your answer!

Why do they block ports, while BSNL doesn't? Isn't the practice of blocking ports, unethical? Because someone might host a server, someone might use RDP, while some other might use mail clients.

Hosting a web server on a residential connection is not allowed by any ISP I know of. Using a mail client is something that almost every one does and if port 25 is blocked then you could use another port like 2525 for example and it is easy to configure.

If you get a 1:1 contention ration connection then the ISP should not be blocking anything atall as the connection is just for you and the excuse that other users get affected wont work but those connections are costly.

If there is something you are trying to do and are not able to because a particuylar port is blocked then just post a thread in the appropriate section and I am sure you will take away a decent solution to by pass the stupid restrictions your ISP may be imposing.

Port 25 is being blocked by many ISPs these days due to that port being used for sending spam emails without the knowledge of computer owner. Some people have no idea what their computer is doing behind the scenes.

Thank you so much for the reply, admin.

I was trying to download via torrents, as well as use RDP.

Probably due to the closed ports, I get horrible speeds in torrents, while sometimes it doesn't download at all. Even the well-seeded latest Ubuntu remains stuck at "connecting to peers."

    I can't use RDP either.

Not only 25, they've blocked almost all ports, except 222 and 6783. These are overcrowded and most of the time, the ping request gets timed out.

Seems RDP Port is not enable in your firewall.

If not work then change your RDP listening port of your server and then try to access your remote desktop account.
(U can change RDP Port in Regedit.exe)
