    Default Solar Powered Water Heater

I'm having my house rebuilt and in the process of planning we have considered having a solar powered water heater fitted. Its quite common these day and I've seen many homes have a solar powered water heater. Its good because its saves on the electricity during the winter time, as normally in the cold weather we turn on the geyser about 10 minutes before having a bath, but with the solar powered water heater we can have hot water all throughout the day.

What are your thoughts on this, is it a good idea to have a solar powered water heater?

I have an article somewhere in this section itself. Search for it. It talks about solar water heaters, gas fired water heaters, etc. The small issue about solar heaters is the length of pipe from storage to the bathroom. That part of the water will be cold(er). So you may have to let off a lot of (cold) water before you start getting hot water. Solar heaters do not work well during the rainy season. In the northern places such as Delhi and above, in winter the temp is too cold and there is a fog that sometimes as late as 11 AM and back again at 6 PM. So solar heater will suffer.

Apart from the these drawbacks, solar water heater is the best solution. The other option is to get a piped natural gas (PNG) in the home and install a gas fired heater. PNG is much safe than LPG.

Even I have seen many people have solar paner water heaters on their terrace.

J4K when you say get piped natural gas in the home, isnt that something which is done by the government, and its not something you can choose to have? Ive seen the piped gas connection in homes, but its been fitted in a whole block of homes and not just one home.

That is true about PNG. You have to talk to Mahanagar Natual Gas Limited or such authority to provide PNG. The network is not yet strong and PNG supply may not be feasible. In that case LPG geyser is an option like this one:

Please still note that in cold places such as Delhi in Winter, the above may not suffice. It works very well for me in Pune.

Ive always been against use LPG water heaters, as there was an incident which occured when someone had a LPG water heater in their home, and since then I thought I wouldn't use an LPG water heater, instead use an electrical water heater. However the idea of an LPG water heater is very good and it saves a money.

I am waiting for the PNG supply to my home. Hopefully, in six months time ...
